Biofeedback therapy is a technique that uses visual or auditory feedback to gain control over involuntary bodily processes.

Purpose of the Procedure

In gastroenterology, biofeedback is primarily used to treat disorders of defecation, such as fecal incontinence and dyssynergic defecation.

Procedure

  1. Sensors are placed in the anal canal and on the abdominal wall.
  2. The patient is asked to perform various exercises, such as squeezing or pushing.
  3. A computer displays the muscle activity in real-time.
  4. The therapist guides the patient to improve muscle coordination and strength.
  5. Multiple sessions are typically required for optimal results.

Note: Biofeedback is a learning process and requires active participation from the patient.
