Endoscopic Ultrasound

Hospital Building

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) combines endoscopy and ultrasound to create detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs.

Purpose of the Procedure

EUS is used to diagnose and stage cancers of the digestive system, evaluate chronic pancreatitis, and guide fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies.

Procedure

  1. The patient is sedated for comfort.
  2. A specialized endoscope with an ultrasound probe is inserted through the mouth.
  3. The endoscope is guided through the digestive tract to the area of interest.
  4. High-frequency sound waves produce detailed images of the digestive tract and nearby organs.
  5. If necessary, a biopsy can be performed during the procedure.

Note: EUS can provide more detailed images than external ultrasound for certain areas.

Benefits

  • Provides highly detailed images of organs and structures
  • Allows for simultaneous biopsy if needed
  • Less invasive than exploratory surgery
  • Can detect small lesions that might be missed by other imaging methods
