Oesophageal manometry is a test used to measure the function of the lower oesophageal sphincter and the muscles of the oesophagus.
Purpose of the Procedure
This test helps diagnose swallowing difficulties, heartburn, and conditions such as achalasia or diffuse oesophageal spasm.
Procedure
- A thin, pressure-sensitive tube is passed through the nose and down the throat.
- The tube is positioned in the oesophagus.
- The patient is asked to swallow water at intervals.
- The pressure of muscle contractions is measured along the length of the oesophagus.
Note: The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
Benefits
- Helps diagnose oesophageal motility disorders
- Guides treatment decisions for oesophageal conditions
- Can help determine if anti-reflux surgery is appropriate
- Minimally invasive diagnostic tool
